At the same time we do not despise the saints or think basely of them. For we acknowledge them to be living members of Christ and friends of God who have gloriously overcome the flesh and the world. Hence we love them as brothers, and also honor them; yet not with any kind of worship but by an honorable opinion of them and just praises of them. We also imitate them. For with ardent longings and supplications we earnestly desire to be imitators of their faith and virtues, to share eternal salvation with them, to dwell eternally with them in the presence of God, and to rejoice with them in Christ. And in this respect we approve of the opinion of St. Augustine in De Vera Religione: 'Let not our religion be the cult of men who have died. For if they have lived holy lives, they are not to be thought of as seeking such honors; on the contrary, they want us to worship him by whose illumination they rejoice that we are fellow-servants of his merits. They are therefore to be honored by the way of imitation, but not to be adored in a religious manner,' etc."Pastor TAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11583823110058305138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8194673.post-1156312446552158652006-08-23T00:54:00.000-05:002006-08-23T00:54:00.000-05:002006-08-23T00:54:00.000-05:00I'm involved with Reformed University Fellowship a...I'm involved with Reformed University Fellowship at Texas A&M, and helped design a t-shirt for our group last year. In gothic script, the front reads "Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior whom I love and fear." The back reads "John Calvin [portrait of Calvin] Ye Olde Homeboy".

We meant it as a parody of and response to the popular "Jesus is my homeboy" shirts—a much-needed one, I still think. Some people in the group probably do admire Calvin too much, though; j.o.'s point about pride is a good one. However, I myself am a young man often blinded by spiritual pride. I can think myself a 'good' Christian because I believe I do have good doctrine. I think many young men, who already have sound/reformed doctrine, are vulnerable to a specific form of pride in this area: not applying the truth. If I beleive the Solas, then I should be a very humble man in practice and speech.

We can hold truth tightly, being thoroughly orthodox, yet miss out on truly honoring God by lacking humility in speaking about and supporting the doctrines we profess.

Just a thought!
