Married or Single: For Better or Worse

After John Piper's latest sermon, Single in Christ: A Better Name Than Sons and Daughters, he received a letter asking, “If what you say about the blessing of singleness is true, then why would one even want to be married?” Here is his response.

Justin, I don' know if you're aware of this, but I just published a book on marriage in March entitled, "The Pursuit of Pleasure in the Pleasure of Another: A Christian Hedonist Guide to a Happy Marriage." I'm not trying to get a plug for my book in. I actually find it humbling and amazing that in chapter three I expound the identical four purposes for marriage that Dr. Piper explained in his response. The entire book also works out the same theme of what Dr Piper called "compelling" marriage. I'm just encouraged that my conclusions are so closely aligned with such a Christ-centered teacher as Pastor John.

I am encouraged to see Piper make this point. Most churches I have attended are geared toward couples. Singles typically go unacknowledged. This is unfortunate, as half the population is single.
