CT Cover Story on Calvinism

24 comments | Permalink
Christianity Today has an interesting cover story in the latest issue, which is being shipped this week. The title is: "Young, Restless, and Reformed: Calvinism is making a comeback--and shaking up the church."

Written by Collin Hansen, it's an excellent piece that profiles the Reformed resurgence in the twenty-something crowd. John Piper, Al Mohler, Joshua Harris, Kent Hughes, C.J. Mahaney, and Together for the Gospel are all mentioned.

I'd encourage you to pick up a copy of the magazine at your local bookstore. (I have a hunch it may be their bestselling issue of the year!)

I'll also link to the story when it appears online next week.

Slight typo sir.

"Written by Collin Hansen, it's an excellence piece that"

Need to change "excellence" to "excellent" ;)

Cheers!

As a bonus, you ought to provide information about where they might have gotten that awesome "Jonathan Edwards is my Homeboy" t-shirt. I'm usually good at finding just about anything on the net, but I'm stumped on this one...

You need to make one more change "Young Restless, and Reformed" is missing a comma after "Young". Gosh I hate to pick nits.

This is really interesting news. I would say that Reformed Theology itself has been making a resurgance for the past 15 years or so. This is a welcome thing for me.

When I saw that cover, I had the thought, "Hmmm, I wonder if pride in reformation theology among twenty-somethings is on the rise as well?"

Being essentially reformed, I thoroughly support and enjoy the doctrines of grace. However, I myself am a young man often blinded by spiritual pride. I can think myself a 'good' Christian because I believe I do have good doctrine. I think many young men, who already have sound/reformed doctrine, are vulnerable to a specific form of pride in this area: not applying the truth. If I beleive the Solas, then I should be a very humble man in practice and speech.

We can hold truth tightly, being thoroughly orthodox, yet miss out on truly honoring God by lacking humility in speaking about and supporting the doctrines we profess.

Just a thought! Thanks for this blog JT!

Christianity Today is finally going to be more about Christianity and less about Today (at least for one issue). I am looking forward to reading this issue. I have not said that about an issue of CT for a long, long, time. Thanks for the heads up JT.

My dad has a better T-Shirt. It says "John Knox: Gnarly Calvinist Dude".

I am calvinist/reformed for the most part. Also as a recovering Pharisee, I can validate j.o's point about pride. If our doctrine is sound, Satan wants us to become prideful about it and thereby turn people off to it.

Stay humble, gnarly calvinist dudes.

I'm involved with Reformed University Fellowship at Texas A&M, and helped design a t-shirt for our group last year. In gothic script, the front reads "Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior whom I love and fear." The back reads "John Calvin [portrait of Calvin] Ye Olde Homeboy".

We meant it as a parody of and response to the popular "Jesus is my homeboy" shirts—a much-needed one, I still think. Some people in the group probably do admire Calvin too much, though; j.o.'s point about pride is a good one. I have certainly strayed that way from time to time.

In response to "admir[ing] Calvin too much"...

From the Second Helvetic Confession, 5.4:
"THE DUE HONOR TO BE RENDERED TO THE SAINTS. At the same time we do not despise the saints or think basely of them. For we acknowledge them to be living members of Christ and friends of God who have gloriously overcome the flesh and the world. Hence we love them as brothers, and also honor them; yet not with any kind of worship but by an honorable opinion of them and just praises of them. We also imitate them. For with ardent longings and supplications we earnestly desire to be imitators of their faith and virtues, to share eternal salvation with them, to dwell eternally with them in the presence of God, and to rejoice with them in Christ. And in this respect we approve of the opinion of St. Augustine in De Vera Religione: 'Let not our religion be the cult of men who have died. For if they have lived holy lives, they are not to be thought of as seeking such honors; on the contrary, they want us to worship him by whose illumination they rejoice that we are fellow-servants of his merits. They are therefore to be honored by the way of imitation, but not to be adored in a religious manner,' etc."

I actually Google'd "Jonathan Edwards is my Homeboy" in hopes of finding that t-shirt on CT and stumbled upon your blog! HAHA!!

BTW, you can't forget my beloved pastor, Mark Dever -- senior pastor at Capitol Hill Baptist Church, founder of 9Marks, and avid fan of PURITANS.

I agree with JO. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I AM NOTHING.

the article in the magazine is good, it's not great, but definitely not disappointing. I have no idea if the edition is out yet; but I have a friend who's brother is the vp of Christianity Today so I got a copy from him.

Do you see Calvinism as something that will bring us together or something that will pull apart? Just curious as to your thoughts. I enjoyed the article and your post!

My wife gave me CT and told me she found my Christmas gift - the T shirt! Did a google and found this blog! Would love the T shirt!

I was dissappointed that Sam Storms was not mentioned at the end of the article even though he is not as prominent as the rest.

I am greatful that in God's sovereignty he brought some Fuller students to the church I was pastoring and introduced me to John Piper and Dan Fuller, which led me to Edwards.
