When I saw that Books & Culture editor John Wilson wrote a review of Greg Boyd's Repenting of Religion, I expected a largely positive overview. I judged incorrectly. While Wilson wants to affirm Boyd's positive vision, he also writes that the book is "riven by self-contradictions and flawed by a hermeneutic so naïve it beggars belief. Railing against judgment, Boyd issues sweeping judgments against the church throughout its entire history—judgments that rest almost entirely on sheer assertion."
