MBTS Acquires Spurgeon Library

Don Hinkle reports that Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has purchased the Charles H. Spurgeon Library (6,750 volumes) from William Jewell College for $400,000.
Hinkle recounts that the "Prince of Preachers," "had what is regarded as the world’s finest library of Puritan literature in existence. The library contains many personal works as well as volumes of literature, theology, religion, travel, biography, science, hymnody, history and humor."

"Most of Spurgeon’s original library was distributed among family members and friends after his death in 1892. The Midwestern collection is comprised of volumes that were not retained by the family. It contains books with personal notes and comments, as well as books given to Spurgeon from many 19th century authors." Also, "The collection features one volume dated to the 14th century and one copy of the Geneva Bible dated to the 16th century. A considerable portion of the collection is pre-19th century."

This is probably good news. It has seemed to me, perhaps out of sheer ignorance, that Spurgeon's library was languishing at Jewell.
Spurgeon's library in 1892 was, what -- roughly 12-14,000 volumes? So I guess this represents about half of it. It would be interesting to discover whether anyone knows the whereabouts of the other volumes, or if other sizeable chunks of the library can still be identified.
I think they originally paid $25,000 for it so not a bad return!
Does anyone know where MBTS stands on the Reformed/Armenian Debate? IF it is a good seminary to go to etc?
As a student at MBTS, this is good to hear. (And slightly ironic, hearing it on this blog first.) I can't imagine that Spurgeon's stuff got a lot of attention at William Jewell.

MBTS is conservative theologically, but I'd say the professors are split on the Reformed/Armenian line. Is it a good place to go? Depends on what you're looking for...feel free to shoot me an email.
As a recent Jewell grad (May '06), I've gotta say that I'm fairly pleased. I'd have to say that other commenters were pretty accurate in their analysis. Perhaps at MBTS, it will actually be put to good use and be a little easier to access.
When Don Whitney was at MBTS, he was on a panel/committee called "Friends of the Spurgeon Library" which was trying to bring exposure/usage to the library. Perhaps he was a conduit for this transaction. I welcome it.
Where was Al Mohler on this one? I was surprised to see that Midwestern got this and not Southern. Oh well... you can't win em' all.
