Let the Culture Wars Begin

Sandra Day O'Connor is retiring from the Supreme Court. You can read her brief resignation letter to President Bush.

If you're interested in following these things, ScotusBlog is a good resource. They wrote today:

The White House was not caught entirely off guard. Apparently beginning last week, the Administration began more earnest preparations for the potential nomination of a successor to Justice O’Connor. Robert Novak reported that Judge Edith Clement had been interviewed. Other female candidates that will receive serious consideration are certainly Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, and Edith Jones.

Hugh Hewitt writes:

Justice O'Connor's retirement will unleash the long brewing battle over the Supreme Court, and though I have often been disappointed with her decisions, before the battles get underway over her successor, she deserves thanks and recognition for more than two decades of service as a pioneering jurist and incredible professionalism in the public eye. She will always be the first woman to have served on the Court, and it is unlikely that she will ever be surpassed in terms of graciousness and "judicial temperment."

President Bush will give a statement at 11:15 EST.
