Expositional Listening

2 comments | Permalink
We have heard a lot these days about the importance of expositional preaching. But rarely do we hear about expositional listening. Thabiti Anyabwile, an elder at Capitol Hill Baptist Church, explains that one of the marks of a healthy church member is to practice expositional listening.

For more on how to listen to a sermon, see John Piper's sermon Take Care How You Listen.

Excellent points in both references. See the conclusion of my sermon on Mark 4 for another way of helping folks to listen to sermons. These include:

Realize you won't catch everything. When we lose focus, Satan is apt to accuse us: "You lost focus and missed the last few minutes; you might as well stop listening now." Don't yield to that temptation. No one will catch everything the first time through. Simply resume listening, and ask God to open up the rest to you.

Both articles were good, practical resources to encourage a Berean mentality. I chuckled when I first heard about "expositional listening", but it seems to be a significant, biblical practice. Piper's message shed some new light for me on a familiar passage.

By the way, the second link didn't work for me. Here another link to it:
