The Gospel Coalition: Conference

19 comments | Permalink
Several years ago, Don Carson and Tim Keller began rallying like-minded pastors who center their ministries on “the center”—Jesus Christ and him crucified. Fifty pastors--including John Piper, Mark Dever, Phil Ryken, Mark Driscoll, C. J. Mahaney, Ligon Duncan--comprised the initial meeting in Deerfield, Illinois.

They are now hosting a special 550-person-only conference for fellow pastors and laborers on May 23-24, 2007 at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield. I've been given permission now to post this information onto the blog.

To register, go to the Gospel Coalition registration page. Enter the username gospel and the password coalition. Lodging information is available on the website. Conference registration is $80.

Here is the schedule:

Wednesday Afternoon (May 23)

1:00 - 2:45 Open Corporate Worship

clearly not going to be able to go to this...but, man, just reading the title of the last message of the conference makes me want to be there, read Revelation and get to the last day!

Wow! Why so limited? Is it a space issue? I am definitely a fan of smaller gatherings for the sake of intimacy, but this will have to be made available in audio or video format afterwards. Many of us long to benefit from these men who submit their lives and churches to the glory of God. Harry Reeder was my pastor for 4 years in Charlotte, NC. I am delighted that he is a part of this. Of course, many of us hope that at very least, Pastor John's sermon will be available on the DG website.

JT,

Just to reiterate Matt's question above, will audio be available for purchase or download?

Conference after conference after conference. All around the United States, it's one Christian conference after another, yet our country is largely unaffected by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Are we doing ANYTHING with all this stuff we learn at conferences? It sure doesn't seem like it. Given the truth of several hundred conferences a year in hundreds of denominations, some conferences attended multiple times by the same folks, you'd think SOMETHING would sink in. Yet we have no revival. Many of our churches are on life-support. And the Church looks just like the world.

Why not save all the time and money that goes into these conferences and instead pour them into the lost people in our neighborhoods. Instead of constantly learning, but never practicing what we learn, why don't we declare a moratorium on conferences for three years and see if anything is lost (besides speaker fees and a bunch of folks feeling good about the temporary high they get off a conference).

After a while, you have to seriously ask of this conference-mania, "What's the point if we look in the mirror and then go away and forget what we look like?"

In response to Dan, the 2006 DG national conference stuff has made a profound impact on the way I do a lot of things at the church I attend. Seems pretty unfair for him to attack these conferences the way he did.

In furthering "anonymous"'s comment, a dear brother of mine was at the Desiring God conference and when he returned home to N. Ireland has been making dramatic influences upon alot of people. And even though I wasn't there, the audio downloads have impacted my own life and as i'm sharing them around we're seeing people challenged greatly by them.
Though I agree that in proportion to how much knowledge is out there and how little we do, surely that is not so much a reason to critcize conferences where Christ is uplifted and His supremacy is preached. But rather a reflection on the hearers? Because people do not respond and do what they hear does not mean that conferences are not worth while?

Conferences often further unity across denominations and local churches. This is a good thing.

Conferences are good. This one will probably do some good too.
Although of course, the 'center' of "Christ and him crucified" is rather "Christ, and the Reformed understanding of his crucifixion". Not necessarily a negative, but a clarifying point nonetheless.
Stanley Hauerwas preaches 'Christ and him crucified', but it affects his theology very differently than it might affect JT's or Dr. Piper's...
Long story boring, there are 'like-minded people' whose 'center' is 'Christ and him crucified', who won't be going to this conference...
My two-cents.

i disagree with the theology of the local church movement. We must worship in the global church. Also, most local churches are homogeneous. If you advocate local church for accountability, I agree this must be an important aspect, but its not the whole point of church. May we be grown and expanded to worship God with all nations, in the global church, and forsake the heresies of this local church movement called 9 marks.

Don’t forget the NT epistles were written to specific and local churches (e.g. church at Corinth, church at Philippia, churches of Galatia, etc.).

WHERE is the conference? I would love to pass this along to my pastor but I don't see any other details on the registration page other than a breakdown of who's speaking when!
