Welch: Read Job 38-42 Every Day for a Month

Ed Welch:
Apart from the giving of the law, God's longest speech in the entire Bible is in the last four chapters of Job. It is a speech intended to cause Job to grow even more in knowing God's greatness. If you read these chapters every day for a month you will find that they are a treatment for almost anything. Do you fear people? Are you suffering? Are you anxious? Depressed? Struggling with anger? Hard-hearted? listed to these questions from the mouth of God.
"Have you ever given orders to the morning?" (38:12)

"Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?" (38:17-18)

"Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, 'Here we are?'" (38:35)
The pace of God's questions is relentless. They leave you speechless. But they are graciously delivered to a righteous man who prizes the fear of the Lord above all else.

What a strange and gracious providence. I started reading "When People are Big and God is Small" last Thursday (finished today). Anyhow, Mark Dever's sermon on Sunday touched on this book and then all these posts from Ed Welch. Great stuff. Keep it comin'!

In Christ,
Noah

Thanks for this post! These are some of my favorite chapters in all the Bible for the very reason that they declare the greatness of God, spoken from the voice of God himself!

Just recently I noticed that Isaiah 40 ministered to me as well in showing the greatness of God. But, as this passage shows God's greatness, it also shows his tenderness towards his children in Isaiah 40:11. Praise God for His mercy!

I agree with the first commenter: what a strange and gracious providence. For the past few weeks, and today in particular, I have realized what a huge role fear has played in my life, especially the fear of people. I was thinking about it all the way from work right before I read this. Thank you, I plan on taking Ed Welch's suggestion.

Justin, I'll be blogging about this notion in a few days, but as I near the end of CS Lewis' The Problem of Pain I find that his most sensible answers will seem largely self-evident to people with a big God and completely unsatisfactory to those with a small one. This passage of Job is one of those wonderful passages that enlarges your view of God.
