essentially, vote republican and re-elect bush. let us not be bogged down by the rumors of bush and his cocaine, nor that he is an arminian with a shotgun of a freewill defense, neither that he has in the way of Machiavelli sowed the seeds of violence, killing, and disaster, in order to bring about the hegemony of "just" power and to force peace and freedom (oxymoron???) according to his terms. i ask you this: would the prince of peace authorize the devastation brought on by bombs? i can't see it. but grudem wants to rally the troops for bush this tuesday. in spite of his great praises, i'm afraid that bush has chosen to be a republican before he has chosen to be a federalist or a supporter of states rights and small government, which he ran on and which our country was founded upon. has there since been a rebuke outside of pragmatic conjecture? no. never since the days of fdr have our altruistic hopes been so far-fetched, and our political philosophy so unjust and we so unaware. bring back publius, the federalist elite; shut down washington as we know it and abolish the unjust behemoths we call republicans and democrats (which only a small degree of difference separates). do not be deceived, republicans are just as much in bed with big corporations and bribery and ungodly interests as the democrats. to those of you who are so quick to judge the democrats, take the advise of jesus and examine the log in your own eye first. it is too long that we have been waiting for a good alternative to this insipid dialog and impoverished political climate. onward, away from the status quo, we need a renaissance; we need to be born again. come lord jesus, come.
I know I live in the UK, but my understanding is that as Mr Bush is serving his second term he can't be re-elected. He can remain in office for the remainder of his term, but that is that. Oh, yet again we have an 'anonymous' who wishes to pontificate without owning up to who they are.
Having thought through the 'Memo' and from an outsiders point of view, (as in UK) I would rather have Bush at the helm than a Democrat replacement and the thought of the Democrats having more control in the Houses is very worrying. As to the Prince of Peace authorising war, well lets see now, oh yes, the Israelites taking Canaan by war was authorised/instigated by the Prince of Peace (God) and as I remember it that involved lots of people dying. It would probably help if you read your Bible with your eyes open Anonymous.
I appreciate much of what Grudem has written, and hope for Republican control of the House and Senate, but the prayer "Lord, if you will not help this kind of a courageous President who earnestly seeks to follow you, and continually seeks to walk in paths of righteousness, then what kind of President will you ever help?" should raise some concerns, read in one light. The tone might be misconstrued to ask God to fit our will, rather than us fitting his.
You seriously believe the story of the Canaanite genocide is normative for the way America in the 21st century should conduct wars? God condones a lot of things in the OT that I wouldn't recommend doing now.
Lazlo, The point I was trying to make is that too much can be made of the 'Prince of Peace', too often forgetting that that same prince is God and remember that he is the same yesterday, today and forever. You may not approve, but that is not to say that God would not use war for His purposes. That is not to say that they would match with ours. Also remember that God is sovereign over all things and uses what we might mean for evil for His good purposes. I also suggest not trying to limit God by what you may or may not approve of in regard to your comment "God condones a lot of things in the OT that I wouldn't recommend doing now." I am sure that God does a lot of things you would not recommend, but then He is God and you most certainly are not.
It's a good thing I'm not God, because I would probably not be very good at it.
What you say is reasonable, but I take a different approach to the war question. Yes, for certain God can use war for his purposes, and the Bible tells us that he does. But the very testimony of the Prince of Peace tells us to love our enemies and do good to those who persecute us. I take this seeming paradox to mean that we should avoid war at all costs -- and when it breaks out (as it inevitably will), pray that God will forgive us and continue working in our sinful world.

JT,
When are you going to turn of the anonymous comments?
Come on JT...that was not a prayer, and it is embarrassing that anyone would consider it such.
That was a political speech about conservative political ideology and had little to nothing to do with theology.
