Chesterton on Tradition

6 comments | Permalink
G.K. Chesterton:

Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about. All democrats object to men being disqualified by the accident of birth; tradition objects to their being disqualified by the accident of death.(Orthodoxy, pp. 64-65)

Justin,

I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your website and am very thankful for it. The daily posts have helped direct me to great teaching with heart and mind. The links have provided a source to see the interconnected relationships of many leaders. This process has been instrumental in guiding me to a Sovereign Grace church in Cleveland that is only miles from my house. Thank you once again for your daily pointers.

I am now reading Orthodoxy and this post reminded me to thank you for your website and your humility and joy in learning from our ancestors.

Reminds me of an interesting aphorism on the potentially awkward relationship between truth and tradition: "Consuetudo sine veritate, vetustas erroris est." (trans. something like: "custom without truth is error in its old age", Cyprian, Anti-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 5, Epi. 73, para. 9).

It disappeared!

Surely Chesterton had more to say that that. :)

Oh, it's there, Tim. Copy/paste/enlarge in some other program. You'll see it. And it's worth it! Thanks, Justin.

I think this small font is Justin's commentary on Chesteron. Tradition takes work to seek out, but it's worth the work.
