Shelby Steele on Victory in War

I read opinion articles virtually every day about the Iraq War (what went wrong, what to do, etc.), but I rarely link to them. Today is an exception. Shelby Steele's WSJ op-ed, Our Unceasing Ambivalence, is quite insightful and well worth the read.

Absolutely brilliant!!!!
Justin, this pro-war screed is what passes for insightful these days? Oh, please! (Steele may be clever on matters of race, but when it comes to war, he is clearly out of his element.) The kind of devastating military response he calls for would undoubtedly require a re-instatement of the draft [in order to bring together the hundreds of thousands of troops needed for such an effort], and even worse, the use of brutally severe and indiscriminate warfare. It would in no way be proportional to the perceived original threat posed by Saddam Hussein, and is even less justified now that it has been revealed that our intelligence concerning WMDs was mistaken (to put it charitably). What Steele offers is a blueprint for a total war of annihilation with every single Islamic state around the globe! I struggle to see how Steele's comments can resonate with anyone who professes to be guided by a Christian world-view. Clearly he suffers from the common "barbarian" trait of being all too eager for war. Thank God that the Christian tradition of "just war" still restrains our Nation to some degree.
Pilgrim,
Thanks for your indictment of Justin and of me in your comment: I struggle to see how Steele's comments can resonate with anyone who professes to be guided by a Christian world-view. Your indictment of Shelby Steele is even worse: Clearly he suffers from the common "barbarian" trait of being all too eager for war.
Did you actually read with understanding the Steele column that Justin linked? It seems to me that your reaction to Steele is over-the-top with lack of fair-minded reading.
I'm not looking for a conversation with you, btw. I'm just offering my observations, as you did.
Looks like you're interested in Shelby Steele's opinions and thoughts.
