The Coffin and DNA of Jesus?

From Time Magazine's Middle East blog:

Brace yourself. James Cameron, the man who brought you 'The Titanic' is back with another blockbuster. This time, the ship he's sinking is Christianity.

In a new documentary, Producer Cameron and his director, Simcha Jacobovici, make the starting claim that Jesus wasn't resurrected --the cornerstone of Christian faith-- and that his burial cave was discovered near Jerusalem. And, get this, Jesus sired a son with Mary Magdelene.

No, it's not a re-make of "The Da Vinci Codes'. It's supposed to be true.

Let's go back 27 years, when Israeli construction workers were gouging out the foundations for a new building in the industrial park in the Talpiyot, a Jerusalem suburb. of Jerusalem. The earth gave way, revealing a 2,000 year old cave with 10 stone caskets. Archologists were summoned, and the stone caskets carted away for examination. It took 20 years for experts to decipher the names on the ten tombs. They were: Jesua, son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Mathew, Jofa and Judah, son of Jesua.

. . . Film-makers Cameron and Jacobovici claim to have amassed evidence through DNA tests, archeological evidence and Biblical studies, that the 10 coffins belong to Jesus and his family.

Cameron is holding a New York press conference on Monday at which he will reveal three coffins, supposedly those of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene.

Michael Spencer outlines a response--and is posting updates at his site. James White responds. More details about the documentary here. Brian Maloney responds here.

He'll make the movie, win an Oscar, and gain a few kooky converts to unbelief. Most of these are already scoffers who are looking to validate their embrace of Dan Brown's fiction as truth.

The level to which people will stoop to make a dollar never ceases to amaze, this time, however, the wages of sin is death.

My Bible says that Jesus rose on the third day. Mr. Cameron must be mistaken.

So, after all these years and no one being able to produce the body, James Cameron has succeeded...

I stand with Ryan.

How can Cameron even begin to prove the DNA was that of Jesus of Nazereth and his family? The bones within the various coffins may be of related family members, but that the remains found are those of Jesus of Nazereth or his family is not something that can be proven one way or another.

Another item found and published in Biblical Archaelogy allegedly belonged to James, brother of Jesus, and has been hotly contested. So why isn't this claim being contested by the Israelis?

What a very sad testimony of how Hollywood is out to pillage the masses for money. Perhaps with romantic notions after the Da Vinci Code. How DNA tests point to Jesus is an amusing touch... It seems a bit hard to believe. Sadder yet, that people BUY into such "scientific findings."

I think that it shows again how willing the mind of the unregenerate is to find something, anything that will get them off the hook as regards their sinfulness and the need to come to Christ to find forgiveness for their sin.

I find it hillaroius that there are so many people in this world willing to comment on things that they literally know nothing about. Ignorance is basing your whole life on one book , blindly believing literally everthing in it ,even though history has shown [And you can really look this up I swear] the contents have been modified many times over. Get real, the bible was written during a time of extreme ignorance. They didn’t even have schools back then. It has been rewritten, Edited and retranslated by Popes, Kings, Governments, and Churches alike. If there really is a God and Jesus really was his son, noone who walks this earth today could possibly know the real story. Now if there is not sufficient scientific evidence to prove the validity of Cameron’s assertions in his documentary, the skeptical thinking mind will look for answers elsewhere. But make no mistake the skeptical mind will ,in the interest of examining all the facts, watch and analyze this documentary. If more people were inclined to get all of the facts before opening their ignorant mouths this would be a much more peaceful world. Is it so hard to admit that you just don’t know? Do you really need someone to tell you what is right and wrong? Maybe you just like being part of a group? If there is a God he gave you free will so you could think for yourself not so you would have to pay a preacher to do it for you. Use your mind and check out the facts and don’t be so quick to judge without seeing. Otherwise, you sound like a complete moron ready to burn the witch.

Tim Nelson said, "Do you really need someone to tell you what is right and wrong?"

Yes. Did I want to be told that I was wrong, no. Foolish, sinful men like myself in this world do not like being told they are wrong, or sinful. That is why I hated God, because in His perfection, His light shined on my darkness through His word and revealed my true condition. This is why man hates God. This is why there is such an effort to discredit Christ, for to do so would be to discount the Bible, which would in effect, turn out the light on this evil unbelieving world. This Light will never burn out, nor can be turned off.

mmm. I like what Tim, the one who thinks he's is not ignorant. Tim many Christians believe in the Bible and other great works that historically record the life death and ressurection of Christ.

The Dead sea scrolls aren't "altered, they are the real thing dude. You could even read them.

It's funny how people are so quick to easily discredit someone's faith, when they really don't even know what faith is.

Peace on earth

all i keep reading about is ten ossuaries.. but only seven names. if were so apt to assume this is jesus' family tomb then the other three names (which no one is revealing) should follow suit. the claims being made are all too convenient in par with this "documentary" being successful. it makes me sick that anyone would think this so called discovery (that has been around for nearly 30 years) is going to end christianity. good luck, sir.

there clearly arent enough scientific, logical, biblical, skeptical or common sense facts to appropriately back this documentary- especially when professionals are arguing the case. in all given honesty.. the facts just negate each other and this whole situation should be nothing more than a simple discovery or an interesting movie.

for all the heated agnostics out there who are so quick to throw fire on religious beliefs.. you know no more about my religion then i have an understanding of your lack there of. DO NOT speak to me of ignorance.. for there may come a day where people will look back on our society in pity for the amount of people who saw no God or religion and they may pin the same tags on your type as you are pinning on mine. it is as possible as its opposite.

saying that people back in time were ignorant is also a gross error. the human race as we know it has had the same brain capacity thoughout time.. it is trade (of ideas, goods et cetera) that has provided us more materials to advance ourselves. the greatest of minds have been wrong in the past just like we will be wrong about things ourselves, in our time.

to entertain a thought without accepting it is the mark of an educated mind
-Aristotle

is it so hard to admit that YOU just dont know, tim nelson? dont be so quick to judge without UNDERSTANDING. otherwise you sound like a complete moron ready to burn the witch.

you pretty much called yourself out.

oh and check your facts.. the entire new testament was written beginning in 50 AD.. long after a good handful of intellectual figures opened academies or what one would consider- present day schools. on top of that the new testament is about 99.5% accurate in comparison with its original text. food for thought.

The concept of finding Jesus unresurrected body is not a new idea. This reminds me of the movie from 1986 starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel, "The Inquiry," where the Roman Emperor sends Carradine's character on a quest to find Jesus's body so as to quash the burgeoning sect of Christianity. That was actually a pretty good movie, probably better than this current rehashing of the story.
As for doing DNA tests on the "bones" of Jesus, why not set some of this DNA aside and make a Jesus-clone. If the Jesus-clone can walk on water then that would be proof positive that indeed this was the tomb of the Lord.

To Larry Seidlin: I think there was a book out called "The Genesis Code", by John Case, where someone made a Jesus-clone using a relic from the cross Jesus was crucified on.

I've lived here in Israel for the last 30 years, and these damn Russians are ruining it, worse than the Palestinians. If we are discussing the subject of DNA tests on ancient Jews, how about requiring DNA tests on all these Russian so-called Jews moving here, they are not real Jews but Khazarites.
