Piper on Prosperity Preaching

8 comments | Permalink
John Piper on Prosperity Preaching: Deceitful and Deadly. Here are his main exhortations:
  1. Don’t develop a philosophy of ministry that makes it harder for people to get into heaven.
  2. Do not develop a philosophy of ministry that kindles suicidal desires in people.
  3. Do not develop a philosophy of ministry that encourages vulnerability to moth and rust.
  4. Don’t develop a philosophy of ministry that makes hard work a means of amassing wealth.
  5. Don’t develop a philosophy of ministry that promotes less faith in the promises of God to be for us what money can’t be.
  6. Don’t develop a philosophy of ministry that contributes to your people being choked to death.
  7. Don’t develop a philosophy of ministry that takes the seasoning out of the salt and puts the light under a basket.

I'm tempted to say that he should have phrased all of his points in the positive rather than as negatives, but then I might be accused of preaching a positive thinking gospel ala N.V. Peale :)

Good points by Piper as usual.

I linked to that on my site as well. I pray that someone looks at that w/an open heart who has been overtaken by the 'gospel' of prosperity.

Interestingly, the local paper here in Minneapolis ran a front page cover article on a popular local H/W preacher Sunday.

It is my conviction the health/wealth garbage has and continues to do more harm to the cause of Christ and His Kingdom than all the other "cults". Those who "buy" into the other-gospelness-of-health-and-wealth tend, when they recognize the P. T. Barnum-ness of the movement, through out the Baby with the (dirty) bath water. "In this world you will have tribulation."

My pastor's take (which I'm sure is not unique to him) on "prosperity preaching" has summed it up nicely for me. If the gospel you're preaching can't be applied just as easily to the poorest part of the world as it can to a relatively affluent audience, it's not the real Gospel.

That is good stuff from Piper. It's about time the poor deluded prosperity suckers woke up and did some research themselves because this false teaching is the road back to atheism.
