Free John MacArthur!

24 comments | Permalink
There's some great news coming from Grace to You, the ministry ministry of John MacArthur.

I'm told that starting next Wednesday, November 5 (the day after the election), Grace to You will announce a new policy, effective immediately, that all of their mp3 downloads of John MacArthur's sermons will be completely free.

That's 3500 sermons for free--with no strings (like required registration) attached.

Hats off to Grace to You for this generous move!

Make sure to visit the site next Wednesday.

Praise God! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been e-mailing my favorite ministries, encouraging them to follow Desiring God's lead on "giving the gospel away" on their websites. Way to go, MacDaddy!

I didn't know that someone was holding John MacArthur captive!

Best. Graphic. Ever.

TeamPyro needs to come back from hiatus or else the blogosphere is going to fill the void our blog normally occupies in the "perfect parody graphics" category.

Frank, with Phil still in excellent form, two words: Never. Happen.

This title makes me think of this post over at, you know, that blog that the readers of this blog know.

If only Redeemer Pres would follow suit! I have written a few times asking for them to free Tim Keller. I find Keller more helpful than any current teacher when it comes to church planting and missions.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the cash to purchase his studies.

Someday it will happen-

The posts there are great, but it's always the meta that gets me. ALWAYS. Even here 3 years later the meta for that post GETS ME.

ARGH.

I actually sent Redeemer one of my "give away the gospel" e-mails encouraging them to follow Piper's example. They wrote back and said that it was impossible for them. The costs behind mp3 production were too high. (??????) What costs? You have a volunteer digitally record the sermon, you have a volunteer download it to a computer. The only cost involved is website bandwidth, right? And I've heard that's pretty cheap now. I was really surprised at their defensive answer.

I am with you guys - if Tim Keller and R.C. Sproul freed their sermons as well I would be a very happy person. I just don't have the money to pay for all the messages I would like to hear...

(On a funnier note, I bought $100 worth of C.J. Mahaney's sermons just a month or so before they made them free - at least it went to a great cause!)

And next on the list I'd recommend would be Jim Boice's stuff at the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Having only passed on in 2000, his stuff is still very helpful and not so dated. Boice's Romans series is nearly 300 ever-more-hard-to-come-by bucks!

So that means that they were actually charging people to listen to his preaching via mp3 prior to this? Wow, that's sad to hear....
I can't even imagine charging for that. The cost to do so is very little. It's hard to imagine pastors would charge for mp3 downloads. Even if they couldn't afford to do it on their own, there are sites that host as many sermons as you want to upload for only a buck a sermon one time upload fee and $30/month membership fee. Nearly anyone can afford that, let alone large and famous ministries.

I guess it is good news, but difficult to get excited about it much when it seems as though it should have been this way from the very beginning. Get the gospel out there whatever it takes! Can you imagine the help that could have been brought to poor people in third world nations for years prior to this if it were free!??? It seems as though the vision of many needs to be widened beyond the rich and business minded of America.

It is almost funny to see that the gospel is being given away "free". But the implications are too sad for it to be funny.

"I can't even imagine charging"

Yeah, good thing the "counter-culture Emerging Church guys don't do that for their MP3s, books and conferences.
