On the Physical Death of Jesus

Written over 20 years ago and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, this article goes into graphic detail about the physical pain that Jesus would have endured in his beatings and crucifixion--which pales, of course, to the spiritual and emotional pain of bearing the wrath of his Father on behalf of God's children.

The article was hugely controversial to a segment of JAMA's readership. The amount of space devoted to publishing the various replies and attempted rebuttals was (I believe) unprecedented for the journal. Many of the responses were submitted by Jewish physicians who were quite outraged that JAMA's editors would think such a subject was pertinent to include in a medical journal.
