I would nitpick and say yes, there is a reason to preach without pictures and maps. Preaching is to be done by words, not images.
"There is now no excuse to teach or preach without pictures and maps."
That is: In the small segment of the world that has good electricity, projectors, and money to afford it all.
Note to both BJ and Yosuf: he said "excuse," not "reason."
And yes, preaching should be primarily words, but just as Jesus could have drawn a simple line in the sand to illustrate a journey, so I think it's possible for us to show or distribute a map (say of Paul's 1st missionary journey) in an appropriate and helpful way.

The OP implied that preaching without pictures and maps is inferior. I disagree.
Can it used appropriately? Sure. But it's not required.
And I make a distinction between teaching and preaching.
Hi JT,
I was wondering if you wouldn't mind doing a post sometime about what you find beneficial about knowing maps and geography.
You often post links to things to help people understand different locations and such, and I love the Bible, I've just never really seen what I could gain by knowing the geography of it all. If you could give some insight as to the goodness of it I'd really appreciate it, 'cause I hate to miss out on something good!
Thanks,
Robert
