How to Pursue Humility

I found this counsel by John Piper to be very helpful. This line in particular stands out: "be more amazed that you're saved than that they're lost." Read the whole thing.

i got the chance to sit next to him on the plane on the way home from T4G and I was thinking about how it must be difficult to deal with people continually coming up to you and telling you how much they love you and your speaking, books, and ministry.

I found him to be refreshingly humble and ordinary. I never felt like I was sitting next to someone who was so accomplished and published as he is, but I felt like I was sitting next to and talking to a man who was pursuing the holiness of Christ, just like me.

Hey Justin,

You might appreciate this book promotion video shown recently at the New Word Alive conference in the UK.

Piper wrote:

"A third thing is ask people around you to be honest and tell you when you're blowing it, whether you're blowing it in little ways or big ways."

I never had to ask for this, my wife and three kids provided this without asking. A fellow attended my church once who actually went around singing, "Oh Lord it's hard to be humble, when your perfect in every way" His wife smiled but never corrected him. Now no one wants to be around either of them. Lack of humility has consequences.

That's an amazing quote. I was reminded of that this evening. It reminds me of what John Bradford said when watching a condemned criminal face execution: "There, but for the grace of God, go I."
